A Heartwarming Fire Cider Tonic

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR!! Time to prep our wintery remedies and elixers, and squirrel them away in cool dark places until the annual sniffles and sneezes arrive. So, I asked my dear friend Nikki to share her delicious Fire Cider recipe, to keep us healthy and active the whole season through. Nikki is an amazing mama to 3 little ladies, a student of plant medicines, a rainbow warrior, a multi-level entrepreneur and the woman behind IG's @cosmic_conduit. I hope you enjoy her medicine and stories.

Xo, Melanie

A heart & body warming winter tonic that boosts your temperature as well as your immunity. Sweet, spicy, sour and pungent all in one swig, Fire Cider, is an acquired taste for some and a soothing sensation for others, I recommend taking it slow if its your first rodeo.

Originally created by legendary herbalist, Rosemary Gladstar in the late 70s, Fire Cider has gained popularity and demand over the years since its debut. If you research online you’re sure to find plenty of recipe variations all with unique additives, usages and intentions.

I am sharing a slight adaptation to her original recipe but just as she does, I highly encourage you to use additional ingredients that you might have in your garden or find in your local grocery co-op. The plants speak to each of us at different moments and in different subtle ways, so don’t be afraid to listen and create your own intuitive variation.

The ingredients in Fire Cider work synergistically with each other to create an inner warmth that not only boosts your immune system but stimulates your body’s beautiful processes of assimilation, detoxification and restoration. Great for daily usage during the colder months but especially useful during a spell of cold/flu which is why you want to prepare it now, as having it on-hand when the inevitable germy season arrives will give you a great sigh of relief.

Onions, garlic, turmeric and horseradish combine their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antibacterial power to really show up for battle against foreign invaders especially in the case of upper respiratory distress. The black peppercorns are added to boost the absorbability of curcumin, the main anti-inflammatory component of turmeric.

Cayenne, ginger, cinnamon and jalapeños are vasodilators creating and sustaining the inner fire, making it more challenging for germs to survive the heat. Vasodilators help to open and expand blood vessels which assist in overall circulation while simultaneously moving the healing compounds of fire cider into your bloodstream, with effortless and graceful fluidity. Did you know that when you have a colder body temperature viruses can survive longer? Maintaining a consistently warm body temperature despite the external weather makes it significantly harder for bacteria, viruses and germs to thrive, hence the beneficial warming feature of this tonic.

Rosemary & lemon to cleanse and purify while also adding a little boost in vitamin C to help digest and absorb vital nutrients from this combo.

And honey to tie everything together in this apple cider vinegar base. Nothing beats raw local honey ~ I get mine from my good friends at Rough N Rowdy Honey and cannot say enough good things about the quality of product from this family owned, multi-generational beekeeping bunch. The benefits of raw honey are plentiful but in this mix it really mends everything together giving it a sweet & palatable taste most suitable to the creator, YOU.

The recipe below is a personal favorite of mine that my family and I enjoy mostly during the winter months but it also makes a tasty additive in salad dressing so we tend to keep a little on-hand year round. I hope this antioxidant rich & anti-inflammatory concoction assists you in having a warm & smooth journey through the colder months ahead ~ a true holistic radiant remedy shared from my heart to yours.

Nikki's Fire Cider

Ingredients

32oz wide mouth mason jar

Apple cider vinegar

1 sprig rosemary

1 whole lemon

3 inch knob of ginger

3 inch horseradish root or 3 TBS fresh

1 TSP cayenne

1 Ceylon cinnamon stick

1 jalapeño pepper

1 medium onion

4-6 cloves garlic

2 inch knob turmeric or 1 TBS powder

5-10 black peppercorns

1/2-1 cup honey reserved for later

Directions:

Chop onions, garlic, jalapeños into smaller pieces, I like to add the onion peels too as they have their own health benefits & antioxidants, add to jar. Carefully + mindfully grate turmeric, ginger + fresh horseradish to release healing benefits. The horseradish will make your eyes tear and clear your sinuses during this process. Add all ingredients to jar.  Zest lemon peel, add to jar then squeeze fresh lemon juice into the jar as well. Add cinnamon stick, rosemary sprig, peppercorns, turmeric + cayenne. Cover with apple cider vinegar, use a plastic lid versus metal as the metal occasionally has a tendency to rust. Shake well. Store out of direct sunlight and shake mixture daily. After 4 weeks, strain and discard contents. Add honey to the liquid, you can use more or less than I’ve included in the recipe based on your own palate and flavor profile.

How to take:

• 1 TBS every morning as a general health tonic

• 1 TBS every two hours if you feel the first signs of a cold (runny nose, scratchy throat, sneezing)

• You can also use on salads, stir-fries and even french fries too!

Please let us know if you make it and what you added to customize it your needs/desire!

ENJOY!
